The Labyrinth-LENS podcast series was built out of interview materials collected as part of our research project. As anthropologists and scientists, part of our work involves talking with people about the topics we study, and often we record these conversations, with the consent of the people we talk with. Current practices (governed by Institutional Review Boards at all universities) generally require that such conversations be anonymous and confidential. When we publish any such material, therefore we try to remove any identifying information and use pseudonyms where possible. In audio material we do the same. Any questions about the use of this material can be directed to the UCLA IRB (see the methods section for more detail).

This project is a little bit different because it emerged out of an archival collection (described in the podcast) of materials from the Los Angeles Department of Regulation (now the LA Animal Services). The only interview comes from Officer Karen Cox, who agreed to be recorded (and named) as part of a routine interview Key parts of this podcast are from archival 16mm films which you can watch on our website. The centrality of the helicopter to brings together a surprising range of connections—the opening helicopter sounds actually come from Karlheinz Stockhausen’s misbegotten Helikopter Streichquartett which was written in the 1990s and has been performed only a handful of times because it involves four different helicopters with four different string musicians playing in sync while broadcast to an auditorium on the ground. The version here was performed in 1995 by the Arditti Quartet abour four Royal Dutch Airforce “Grasshopper” helicopters. More familiar to listeners will be the opening notes of “Suicide is Painless” performed by Johnny Mandel, which accompanies the helicopters in M*A*S*H. The podcast also features a few verses from Ice Cube’s classic “Ghetto Bird” which sums up the centrality of the helicopter in the imaginary of South Central LA over-policing in the 1980s.
