Pest control professionals are frequently exasperated by absurdity. Most often it is the absurdity of humans that flusters them, but it can also extend to the absurd behaviors of companion animals as well. There is something in a story like this of the de-animalized nature of pet dog. Part of domestication is not just the control and the taming, but also the removal of something doggy from the dog. Becoming-human can take a lot of paths, not all of them wise.
